A Child of Our Time is an oratorio written by British Composer Sir Michael Tippett. This moving work was begun just after Britain entered World War II in 1939 and was completed in 1941.
The inspiration was the assassination of a German Official by a 17 year old Jewish boy and
the resulting pogroms against
the Jewish population.
It is as pertinent today as it was during the War as it emphasizes the experiences of the oppressed,
with a pacifist message of
understanding and reconciliation.
It is performed in a three part format similar to Handel’s
Messiah and utilizes a narration
in the form of recitatives. The work is anchored by beautiful arrangements of several African American spirituals including
Steal Away and Deep River.
Performance location to be determined.
