History:  2009-2010 Season

Spring Concert
June 13, 2010
3:30 pm

The Chesapeake Choral Arts Society, directed by Michael Santana, presented its annual Spring Concert featuring “Frostiana: Seven Country Songs,” composed by Randall Thompson with words by Robert Frost, and “Requiem” by John Rutter on Sunday, June 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the La Plata United Methodist Church, 3 Port Tobacco Road, La Plata (near the intersection of Rts. 6 and 301). Tickets were $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. A reception followed the concert.

Thompson composed “Frostiana: Seven Country Songs” in 1959 for the two-hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The work, at times reflective and other times lighthearted, is based on seven Robert Frost poems: The Road Not Taken, The Pasture, Come In, The Telephone, A Girl’s Garden, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and Choose Something Like a Star. Instrumental accompaniment was provided by Brenda McAfee on piano and Cheri Daniels Monk on flute.

The John Rutter “Requiem,” a very lyrical choral composition for soprano solo, chorus and small orchestra, was first performed in 1985. The "Requiem," in both Latin and English, includes seven movements: Requiem Aeternam, Out of the Deep, Pie Jesu, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, The Lord Is My Shepherd, and Lux Aeterna. Our soprano soloist was Sarah Simoncini. Our instrumental ensemble included: piano - Brenda McAfee, organ - Deb, flute - Cheri Daniels Monk, violin - Natalie, cello - Thomas Valdez, timpani - Keith Compton.

These works were performed by the Chesapeake Choral Arts Society as part of our commitment to bring important large choral works to the attention of the Southern Maryland community.
