This year's sessions include:
“The Mechanics of Singing”
This session will present some basic information on how the body works to present the “lovely” sounds we sing and then will go into how to maintain the voice and exercises to help strengthen the voice, increase range, help in breathing properly, etc. Volunteers will be used from the participants to demonstrate some of the exercises and techniques.
Jennifer Cooper, Presenter
Jennifer Cooper (mezzo-soprano) offers a unique, deeply varied repertoire of entertainment, blurring the boundaries of genres and styles. Before taking the stage as a jazz, blues and pop songstress, Cooper sustained a successful, professional opera career after obtaining BA and MM degrees in Solo Vocal Performance from UMBC and Arizona State University School of Music. She received rave reviews for more than thirty principle roles and various concert appearances throughout Europe, Canada and the U.S., and accumulated coveted top prizes in competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council, National Symphony Orchestra Young Artists, Liederkranz Foundation, Sullivan Foundation, and those hosted by several renowned opera companies. “Becoming One with the Choir – Blending and Endings”
This session will present the fundamentals of choral singing – how not to be the one voice everyone can pick out of the choir! You will learn how to blend with the group by using correct vowel sounds, ending words with the group, the importance of watching the director, etc.
Krystal Rickard McCoy, Presenter
Ms. McCoy is a faculty member at the College of Southern Maryland where she teaches music appreciation and conducts the CSM Chorale and Chamber Choir. She is the founder and director of choral activities for St. Maries Choral Arts, a choral community organization based in Southern Maryland which provides singing opportunities for second graders through adults encompassing five choral ensembles. She consults with Encore Creativity for Older Adults, the largest choral organization in the nation for older adults, and conducts the Southern Maryland Encore Chorale at Asbury in Solomons. She is past-president of the Maryland/DC American Choral Director’s Association.
